What's freelancing and how does it work for students?
What is freelancing?
A freelancer is someone who works for themselves. Freelancers choose their own jobs and work hours, allowing them to work on a variety of projects for different businesses if they want. Being a freelancer offers you flexibility and control to sign up to jobs whenever you choose to. Freelancing is often described as ‘sitting on the bench’. With Unilancr, it is quick and easy to make a profile. Then, you can leave and go study, and wait for employers to find you. Or, you can actively search for jobs and apply to the ones you like.
How does it work for students?
It is rare to hear about student freelancing work when you are a student. As students, we all understand that times can be tough and we all need a little extra money now and then. Often, this means we work minimum wage jobs, most commonly at the weekend and in the hospitality / retail industry. However, freelancing is an opportunity to change this. It is really beneficial for students, as it means we can work only when we want or need to, and we can select jobs which are actually related to our degree specialisation! So Unilancr can help you build your experience towards your future career.
Is it free?
Unilancr is free to use. It’s free to sign up, make profiles, and to post, search and apply for jobs. We only take a 10% commission at the Employer’s end at the time of payment. This is low compared to the market, where other well known freelance platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork take 20% and more! Please bear this is mind when you set your hourly rate and factor this in. If you want to earn £10 an hour, put it as £11 so after we take our fee you get what you were expecting.
